We went on a 2 days trip by a train to Kalambaka. It is a very small town in the middle of Greece.

The reason why we travelled there is to see the historical town of Meteora.

It is a home for monks that have lived there since the 11th century. In the beginning, they lived in caves inside the massive rocks. In the 14th century, the monks started building monasteries on top of the cliffs.

The word ‘meteora’ in Greek means ‘suspended in the sky’. Interesting fact: One of the James Bond movie scenes was filmed in one of the monasteries.

Originally, there were 24 monasteries but only 6 remained. We have seen all 6 monasteries and we visited 2 inside: the biggest one and the oldest one.

Before the accessing roads were built the locals supplied food and resources through a rope with a net. The monks also used the same rope to get up to the monastery. They use it in our days at a time to time as well.

Currently, the monks are visited by tourists very often. They are showing how they lived in the past and how their lives look like now. In the monasteries, tourists can see beautiful churches, heritage monks clothes and religious artefacts, books written by monks even in the 8th century.

They can also buy honey and wine produced by monks based on very old recipes.

The trip to Meteora was very interesting. I loved it!
