Meteora 22-23/9/2018

We went on a 2 days trip by a train to Kalambaka. It is a very small town in the middle of Greece.

The reason why we travelled there is to see the historical town of Meteora.

It is a home for monks that have lived there since the 11th century. In the beginning, they lived in caves inside the massive rocks. In the 14th century, the monks started building monasteries on top of the cliffs.

The word ‘meteora’ in Greek means ‘suspended in the sky’. Interesting fact: One of the James Bond movie scenes was filmed in one of the monasteries.

Originally, there were 24 monasteries but only 6 remained. We have seen all 6 monasteries and we visited 2 inside: the biggest one and the oldest one.

Before the accessing roads were built the locals supplied food and resources through a rope with a net. The monks also used the same rope to get up to the monastery. They use it in our days at a time to time as well.

Currently, the monks are visited by tourists very often. They are showing how they lived in the past and how their lives look like now. In the monasteries, tourists can see beautiful churches, heritage monks clothes and religious artefacts, books written by monks even in the 8th century.

They can also buy honey and wine produced by monks based on very old recipes.

Athens 21/9/2018

Today my family and I went to the Piraeus port. In the morning we ate some traditional Greek souvlaki, salad, cheese, bread, sweets, honey and much more.

At the port, there was a nice view of all the ships! Some of them were so big that they looked like hotels. Then we went to the beach and I played with my brother. The waves were very strong, and we got socked.

In the late afternoon, we had some ice cream again. My choice was Raffaello flavour. It was scrumptious!

Athens 20/9/2018

Today my family went to the temple of Olympian Zeus. It is the biggest Greek temple built in honour of the leader of the gods. The temple was designed in Corinthian style.

We also went to see the ruins of the Aristoteles’ school. He taught his students there approx. 3000 years ago.

In the afternoon we went to the Benaki Museum. There were a lot of old statues, some even 5000 years old! After we left we had some ice cream.

Today I went to The Archaeological Museum of Keramikos. The thing that I learnt was about an iron sword and a bronze shield that was used over 3000 years ago. It was very rusty.

Meanwhile, A wild turtle came to me and I named it Chilly because I like chilly and I think it is a good name.

After we went to a hilltop and there was a wonderful view of the Acropolis and the city of Athens.

Today  I went to the historical Acropolis to visit the great temples. I learnt the Greek architectural styles. They are called orders: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.

On the Acropolis hill, I saw a few temples. The biggest one was the Parthenon which was one of the most influential buildings in the western culture. The other temples were: The Temple of Athena Nike and The Erecteion. Lastly, we had ice-cream and went back to our apartment.
